The five research cases that validated the LifeWatch ERIC "Tesseract" Virtual Research Environment are laid out in the "Alien Alert!" magazine.
It is pitched at non-scientific audiences, and packed with explanatory articles on the many players –from the United Nations to citizen scientists– who contribute to the global efforts to mitigate biodiversity loss and preserve the fragile environments on which our very lives here on Earth depend.

The open-access data paper "An individual-based dataset of carbon and nitrogen isotopic data of Callinectes sapidus in invaded Mediterranean waters" (Di Muri et al.) has been published in the Biodiversity Data Journal. The paper is the first in a series called "LifeWatch ERIC Collection of Data and Services Papers" to be published on the Biodiversity Data Journal, describing the resources and assets developed, upgraded and used during the implementation of the IJI.

A New VRE for the study of NIS
|
|
LifeWatch is still a relatively
young ERIC – so far we have focused on the Internal Joint Initiative, our flagship strategy to develop
a new, innovative Virtual Research Environment (VRE) on the study of
Non-indigenous and Invasive Species (NIS). The result of close collaboration between LifeWatch ERIC and biodiversity researchers is an online platform rich in tools that can be adapted to the study of
biodiversity and ecosystems at broad spatial and temporal scales.

From Isolation to Collaboration
|
|
Traditional human field research methods have been expanded significantly in
this twenty-first century by the advent of remote sensing technologies,
satellite photography and genomics. Through sophisticated metadata protocols,
the new LifeWatch ERIC VRE facilitates the integration of these very different
data formats, so that researchers need no longer
work in isolation but can interact globally
with open-source data and open analytics, in what we like to call
"mobilised communities".

|
The end goal of these initiatives is to
produce science-based knowledge to inform policy and
decision-making, to assist with environmental reporting and the management of
Protected Areas and sensitive habitats, and to raise awareness about anthropogenic impacts. LifeWatch ERIC provides
the means to understand and begin to reverse the consequences of the biodiversity and climate crises, and invites all who
are concerned about the environment to share these materials with colleagues,
friends and media. Thank you for your support!
