World Biodiversity Day 2022
Alien Species Week 2022

Welcome to the May edition of the LifeWatch ERIC Newsletter – focusing on World Biodiversity Day, and how we contribute to protecting and restoring biodiversity. The theme is “Building a Shared Future for All Life”, focusing on the new global biodiversity framework, which will be adopted at the upcoming UN Biodiversity ConferenceAdditionally, today makes up part of “Invasive Species Week”, so scroll down for content on invasive species, the focus of our flagship project!

Raising awareness of the biodiversity crisis

LifeWatch ERIC CTO, Dr Juan Miguel González-Aranda, went live on Andalusian TV to discuss the ecological crises we are facing. LifeWatch ERIC makes use of vast amounts of data and cutting-edge technology, such as remote sensing, to monitor and predict changes in the climate and ecosystems, crucial knowledge that can be shared with policymakers and used to develop solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises.

SOS Proteus – Saving the bizarre creature you didn't know existed

This weekend, the 4th “SOS Proteus” international meeting will take place, dedicated to the conservation of the olm (Proteus anguinus) – a blind amphibian, strictly endemic to the Dinaric karst. The full conference will be livestreamed, including a round table entitled ‘e-Science and open science to address challenges in conservation of Proteus’, co-organised with LifeWatch ERIC, which will take place on Sunday 22 May at 11:40–12:40 CEST.

How are lagoons important to biodiversity?

Coastal lagoons are the most productive marine environment, providing us with ecosystem services like fish and sports. Prof Ruzafa (University of Murcia) reveals all about these "reservoirs of biodiversity" in this interview.

The link between gender equality and biodiversity

Gender equality (SDG 5) is a game-changer to accelerate progress towards achieving biodiversity objectives. Gender and Equity Consultant Africa Zanella had this to say about World Biodiversity Day... and we wholeheartedly agree!

Belgian citizen science festival: Zeekerweten

Last week, members of LifeWatch Belgium organised a citizen science festival on the Belgian coastline – attracting over 1,000 visitors! Citizen scientists learned how to spot life at sea, on the beach, and in the dunes.

Bioblitz the weekend with LW Portugal

On the occasion of International Biodiversity Day 2022, this weekend members of LifeWatch Portugal are organising a BioBlitz! So step out into the wild and discover some of the country's iconic natural sites.

Invasive Species Week 2022

In some parts of the world, this week is observed as Invasive Species week! Those who have been following us for a while know that Non-indigenous & Invasive Species (NIS) is the focus of our flagship project, the Internal Joint Initiative (IJI), used to develop specialised workflows to help biodiversity scientists in their research. Check out the videos and podcasts below to learn more about NIS, or to discover how our technology could facilitate your work. #INNSWeek

Crab tracking in the Acquatina lagoon

Vanessa Marocco, PhD student, and Ecology Professor, Alberto Basset, walk us through their tracking of the invasive Blue Crab on the Italian coast in this short documentary.

Assessing NIS impact across different habitats

The LifeWatch ERIC Biotope Workflow is adaptable to a wide range of scales and ecosystems. LifeWatch ERIC collaborator, Dr Heliana Teixeira, explains.

How do alien species threaten biodiversity?

Ecology Professor at the University of Salento, Alberto Basset explains the phenomenon of Non-indigenous & Invasive Species (NIS) for non-scientists in this 15-minute podcast.

Technology hand-in-hand with NIS research

LifeWatch ERIC CEO, Dr Christos Arvanitidis, explains the IJI, which looks at the impact of Non-indigenous & Invasive Species on biodiversity and ecosystems.
